“Plan B helped me get back on track from not knowing what I wanted to do and made me realise I have people who can support me even after the course had finished.” Charlotte, Chelmsford Plan B

Good Man launching bespoke girls project
Have you heard? Due to the overwhelming demand for the Good Man programme, we are delighted to be launching a girl’s only project to follow in its footsteps. Similarly to Good Man, this girls’ only project will mentor girls and young women about the value and characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships. The project seeks to educate and transform young people’s views of what constitutes healthy communication, behaviours and relationships.
This 5 week project will be available to girls aged 13-18 in greater Essex areas. Referrals opened in October 2019, keep an eye on our website for further developments
Youth Workers on the front line at Basildon Hospital
As part of a one-year pilot project, The Police Fire and Crime Commissioners office have commissioned Essex Youth Service to work in Basildon hospital, to support young people aged 13 – 19 years, and up 25 years with special educational needs.
Since July 2019, Pippa Meades and Sarah Milford have been working in A&E and on the children’s wards and have engaged with 80 young people who are victims of youth violence or who are showing vulnerabilities such as mental health issues, sexual health issues or risky behaviours.
The objective is to create a support plan once they have left the hospital. This support could involve linking in with existing community and statutory services, providing access to youth groups and/or referrals to 1-to-1 work. Engagement with the service is completely voluntary.
One parent, when asked about the service said, “they are great!”. The hospital staff have said, “You have been really helpful and go above and beyond your role to help”.

Launch of our first free DofE Summer Programme for young people with additional needs
Our first DofE summer programme for a group of 15 disadvantaged young people took place in July and August and was a huge success! The project was completely funded by an external donor which made the DofE award possible for this group of 13 - 19 year olds.
In just two weeks the group of strangers went from expedition novices to achievers of their first walking expedition. For most, it was their first time away from home working in a team. They all rose to the challenge and dug deep to get the job done. The DofE team at Essex Youth Service aims to run another project of this kind in summer 2020.
We run the DofE Award all year round at eight youth centres across Essex.
