National Young Carers in Schools Award

Our Essex Young Carers Service has two dedicated Schools Development Coordinator’s who work across the County supporting schools.

Their aim is to raise awareness and develop procedures and good practice to enable schools to better identify who their Young Carers are and provide appropriate support. Reaching achievable ‘Young Carers in Schools’ benchmarks, schools can submit for the National award to gain recognition for the support they provide to Young Carers.

Free support from our Schools Development Coordinators will support schools to -

Develop good practice in identification of Young Carers
Provide staff training to gain a better understanding of Young Carers
Deliver School assemblies to raise awareness amongst pupils
Engage with the National Young Carers in Schools Award and be guided through the process of meeting the criteria and being awarded YCiS status
Promote and build their own policies and procedures to identify, support and safeguard Young Carers
Champion the benefits of better support for Young Carers by improving attainment, attendance and reduce bullying
Meet Ofsted requirements by allowing Young Carers to have the same life chances as their peers
Raise awareness of Essex’s Young Carers Service in order to better support individual Young Carers and increase the awareness of the support/provision which is offered. This ensures that all Young Carers across Essex receive appropriate support to reduce the impact of their caring responsibilities.
