Hospital based Youth Work

The Police, Fire & Crime Commissioner (PFCC), through the Violence and Vulnerability Framework, has commissioned Essex County Council Youth Service (ECCYS) to run a youth support project in Basildon & Thurrock University Hospital’s (BTUH) A&E Department at the Basildon site. This service supports young people aged 13–19 (up to 25 with SEND) during their hospital visit and after discharge into their communities.

The project provides professionally qualified youth workers to:

  • Offer support and guidance based on individual needs
  • Signpost or refer young people to appropriate community groups or services
  • Provide specific help such as 1-to-1 support, targeted youth clubs, or referrals to organisations like Social Care or NELFT Mental Health Service

Youth workers are available in BTUH A&E from 3pm–8pm, five to seven days a week, identified as peak times for young people presenting with various issues. Outside these hours, ECCYS offers a referral and on-call system.
